I've never even heard of Ms Laurenston before Geordan commented and mentioned her name in the context of paranormal romance.
Btw, has any of you ever wondered how broad a term romance is when applied to books? :D
So, as this experience went well for me, AND it was my first official Amazon download to my Kindle, I'm now eager for more suggestions that will entice me to download more books. So, suggestions are welcome and well, expected. ;)
But I believe it says a lot about the author that she made me forget I wasn't used to naming parts of human anatomy and by the end of the book forgot that were the words I was reading.
Now I'm making it seem like this was the most important part of the book. :) It wasn't. Well, I don't really know what was the most important part of the book as from what I gathered, it is supposed to be a start of the series, the only problem with that is there is no information when the next book might come out (or if). And I was ready to start reading about Tye and Janelle, figuring if the story about Neecy and Yager came out in 2009 ( and I believe that was re-published), chances were good I might be getting the next installment in a minute (through my lovely new friend called Kindle). No such luck. :(
I keep writing and not saying much about the book. :) But I guess you can tell from the fact that I wanted to start on the next right that minute, I enjoyed it. And I did.
I do think I could have done with a little more character development for Neecy and Yager but it was ok as it was.
I loved the conversations, I especially loved the bizarre situations featuring mostly Mike (I think his name is Mike, I'm bad with names), and the fact that this series is connected to Norse mythology. I don't really want to talk about the story, as with all books that keep your attention throughout, there are enough little things that make it interesting.
P.S. I just need to say this - there is no way Yager looks like the guy from this cover.

ReplyDeleteOh, dear! I haven't read this one... I've read the shifter series (Mane Attraction, Beast Behaving Badly, etc) and the trilogy that loosely ties into it (Pack Challenge, Go Fetch, and I can't remember the third off the top of my head). Yes, the terminology/vocabulary in these books is a "bit" raw (read: "very"). Apologies for not mentioning that fact... I should have also specified the differences in the series...the shifter series has more of the comedy I was talking about in the earlier review. I would not recommend Laurentson for readers who refer to sex as "intimacy", or how can't read Harlequin Romances because they are too explicit...Laurentson is wayyy more explicit.

ReplyDeleteI was hoping you were going to comment. :) I'm actually glad you didn't mention the explicitness because it probably would take me longer to start reading. And now I'm terribly glad I did. I'm used to these types of scenes, just not the vocabulary (as I mostly read historical romance if I'm reading romance) and other paranormal authors either don't put so much effort into these types of descriptions or stick to relatively "safe" vocabulary. And I need less safe in my life (sometimes I think I lead a terribly sheltered life).
Anyway, what would you recommend I start on next? The shifter series?
I would start with the shifter series (I'm not sure which Laurentson penned first). I read from the middle of the series, then went back and then forward. It's quite fun re-reading after getting to know the characters... one great thing that Laurentson does is tie them in together and gives you a different viewpoint of the characters from different character perspectives... My two favorites are Beast Behaving Badly (I wouldn't read this one first... you should probably read this one last as it's leading up to the book that's coming out in May...and the main female character, Blaine, who is soooo funny in this book is given good groundwork in some of the earlier books... at least read the one about her friend Gwen, first...) and The Mane Attraction (maybe start with this?), but really each book is so funny and endearing and draws you in to make you care.... Laurentson also does a wonderful job getting culteral mannerisms down...

ReplyDeleteI will start from the beginning, her site has the series listed in order so I can work my way up to the coming release. :)
But you know what I love - that you write with passion about these books and that's what makes me want to discover a new author for myself. When someone passionately talks about his or her books.
Now when you mentioned cultural mannerisms - I'm thoroughly intrigued...
