Ambre Sultan - the Sultan of ambers

I believe the title says it all. :)

There've been several reviews of this wonder in the last few weeks so I don't want to write another one.
I'll just say that when I say the Sultan of Ambers, I mean it. And I love ambers. In all variants.
A big thank you to Helg from Perfume Shrine who sent some over for me to try (along some other gems I hope I'll be reviewing soon).

So, instead of a review, I leave you with a round-up of those I found the best (and I urge you try this one if you havent already):

Before I finish, I just have to add, it has the additional quality of making me think of Shalimar when I put AS on.
I need a bottle (or 10). :)

  1. You and me both, Ines...This was my gateway drug to amber...and far and away my very, very favorite amber, a Sultan of amber, a Khadine of amber, a...you get the idea. My decant is almost gone. It will be painful when it is! ;)

  2. Tarleisio, all I can say is I'm glad this wasn't my gateway to amber as I can't see how the others would manage to compare favorably. :)
Btw, I'm already planning how to get my hands on a bottle and if I manage, you'll get a decant for sure.

  3. I. Love. Ambre. Sultan. It single-handedly brought me back from the brink of amber overload, I was burnt out on amber and it almost disgusted me because I'd tried too many that left me cold. This perfume is so special, it changed the way I see and experience the note. It's exquisite.

  4. Believe it or not, I was just thinking about this perfume the other day and I was hoping that would have some :D :D

  5. I absolutely love Ambre Sultan! My small sample is almost gone and I'm going to have to break down and find a bottle or something larger than the teeny tiny drops I had... I've tried several other ambers, which all seem flimsy incomparison.

  6. Carrie, it's not often that you come across a perfume that seems to be so loved by many people who don't actually share the same tastes.
I can see how this one can return you back to loving amber. :)

  7. Bellatrix, I'll bring a sample to our next coffee. :)

  8. Alice, flimsy is a good description. I love L'Eau d'Ambre by L'Artisan but when compared to this, it seems to lack some backbone. :)
I'm really glad I started smelling ambers and loving them long before this one came along my way.

  11. I'm on an amber kick right now (just bought decants of Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche, Frapin 1697 and a couple others)...and now you go and post this! Wish I had remembered this one when I placed my decant order last week! **sobs** Like you, I recently read a number of ecstatic reviews of Ambre Sultan at the blogs you mention and a couple others, so not sure how I overlooked it when I was cruising the offerings at TPC. :(

Well, I will get to it eventually...how can I not?

  12. Ines, AS is the sultan, I agree completely. If you're not desperate to have your own bottle just yet, I can decant you some of mine??? Please, just say the words and Ambra-cadabra :-)
My story with AS is; that a friend, who meant to get me something completely different for a B'day present, went into a perfumery and came out with this, having tried it, and just knew I would love it! Amazing how well she would know me, since we had never talked of it, and I had never tried it. It entered my life as I was getting a bit amber weary, and it completely re-opened my eyes/nose to this note ;-)

  13. I think it is so cool that so many people consider this to be the amber to end all ambers, as you said Ines, we all have such different taste (even as Serge Lutens tends to polarize people, we all seem to agree on this one).

  14. Suzanne, thank you for the nice comment.
My amber kick started last autumn and I've found several I love (including Ambre Fetiche). I can't wait to try the Frapin - it still hasn't arrived here. :(
I agree, eventually you will get to AS, it seems unavoidable but also, postpone it as much as you can because you'll probably want more than a little bit. :)

  15. Asali, Ambra-cadabra?! Brilliant! :)
Well, if you wouldn't mind doing some ambra-cadabra with your bottle, I would be very much grateful for a little decant (getting a bottle at this time does not fit into my financial plans but if I have to, I'll find a way). :)
I have to say, you have a wonderful friend. I mean, I have great friends too, but I somehow doubt any of them would be able to buy me a bottle of something I would love (or maybe I'm underestimating them, you never know).

  16. Carrie, you're right. :) I think it speaks much about the quality of perfume if people with different tastes can agree it is great.

  17. Thanks, Ines, it kind of flew out of the pen/ keybord.
You sounded like perhaps you'd already pressed the 'purchase' button, but if you can life with a decant for a bit longer, I'm more than happy to send you one :-)
I'm sure some of your friends could do it too:-)

  18. Dear Asali, unfortunately, I can't press purchase for SL perfumes from Croatia (they only ship to EU countries).
I was planning on asking a friend who might be going to Paris sometime in May to go and get me a bottle but that's still not certain.
And your decant would probably be in my hands sooner and more surely. :)

  19. I planned on trying this one on my skin for a while now. Last time I was in a store that carries SL I was so overwhelmed with everything and didn't have any non-perfumed skin "real estate" left that I ended up just spraying a blotter... After reading all the reviews I regret that even more. But maybe the next time :)

  20. Ambre Sultan is wonderful and unique among the ambers I have smelled. It's warm, herbal and cozy. Just an amazing perfume all around.

  21. Undina, I remember being in SL store in Paris and being completely overwhelmed. :) Getting out in a daze and not remembering much of what I smelled.
Besides, the SL line is so big, you definitely run out of skin "real estate" long before coming to the end of the line. :)

  22. JoanElain, I'm happy to hear you like it too. :)
Incredible how it works well for so many people.

  23. Thank you for the most kind link and mention. :-) I'm supremely happy it wowed you the way it did. It's a masterful amber, right up there at the very top in terms of execution.

  24. Thank you dear Helg for sending it. :)
It makes me happy. Just thinking about it makes me happy. That's the best praise I can give a perfume.
