As a cosmetics addict, it is usual for me to try new things and check how well they work (for me).
Even though some might claim incredible results, using most of them does not have reverse effect than the one stated.
That is, until we come to deodorants.
I used up the Vichy anti-perspirant and rather optimistically, bought some other roll-ons in order to try something else. Plus, the lady who sold me the Vichy told me it's not supposed to be used all the time (?) as it's an anti-perspirant, so for some people that obviously means not completely healthy.
The problem I now face is that nothing seems to be working.
For the time being I am pretty sure it's only me who is bothered by this (careful inquiry with some of my good friends revealed that) but it's still making me feel uncomfortable and well, smelly.
I know that the most obvious solution is to get another Vichy roll-on (and it's on its way, Escentuals has them for a great price) but I would still prefer a choice and a change.
So, this is where you come in. :)
What is your preferred choice of deodorants (spray, roll-on, stick...) and what is THE deodorant that you cannot live without, one that works incredibly?
P.S. Just to give you a run down of stuff I tried that didn't work in roll-on variety: Rexona, Dove, Adidas, Nivea, Avon, Biotherm, Balea, Garnier, Neutro Roberts, Rituals, Bourjois, Lancome...
Sprays generally don't last long enough on me, and I just recently heard some women prefer sticks as those work best for them. I'll be trying my luck with those next.
Hey Ines; I'm not much help because I rarely use it. BUT that said I do have a stick of Herbal Clear natural deodorant http://www.herbalclearnaturally.com/home.asp
ReplyDeleteBloody frida, thank you for the tip! Anything anyone finds useful is something I am willing to try. :)
DeleteHi! In my experience, it's a must with the aluminium salt, i.e. an anti-perspirant (not deodorant). About the health-concerns, there are no proof whatsoever it should be a health issue(that might be what the sales assistant from Vichy was referring to). So my advice is simply try the Vichy again or choose another anti-perspirant (which i btw use all over the body incl. feet). Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you Quintus!
DeleteI also think there is no proof about possible health concerns with anti-perspirants but some prejudice keeps on getting around.
Ok, another anti-perspirant it is (until my Vichys arrive). :)
Hi Ines,
ReplyDeleteI only use natural/organic deodorants, either as stick or roll-on; I find they've become more efficient over the past few years, so perhaps you could give one of them a try? Especially because some have lovely, natural scents (e.g. Weleda). Hope this helps ^_^
Hi Laurinha, thank you for the suggestion. I was wondering if naturals contain possibly some essential oils that might combat the problem.
DeleteThe reason I was wondering is because I was doing some home-made body creams and one was for a friend with children so I didn't put essential oils in and it wen bad rather soon and from the same batch I made myself one with oils and that one is fine.
I will definitely check your suggestion. :)
Ines, I use Dove unscented antiperspirant, which most of the time is sufficient unless I'm really stressed. My husband recently began using Silver Shield Deodorant, which is an all-natural, colloidal-silver based product. The colloidal silver keeps bacteria at bay, so it works pretty well for him (he seems pretty pleased with its performance). It smells quite herbal when he puts it on (pungently so) but the herbal smell actually quiets down very quickly. It's from a company called silver-botanicals.com in Austin, Texas.
ReplyDeleteSuzanne, now that you mention it, it could be stress related that stuff that previously worked (like Rexona and Garnier) no longer work because of my stress levels - which I know are high.
DeleteBtw, I contacted Silver Botanicals and they don't ship to Croatia. :(
Hi Ines,
ReplyDeleteI use the Crystal Stick, which is inexpensive and unfragranced. One stick will last up to a year. Here is a link to their website: http://www.thecrystal.com/
It may take a little getting used to, but I find it works well, lasts long and doesn't contribute to the dreaded yellow underarm stain on white shirts.
Thanks queen_cupcake for the suggestion. It would be great to get a deodorant that deals with yellow stains at the same time. :)
DeleteI just checked the possibility of ordering it here and the shipping amounts to 27$. :S
I second that Crystal deodorant. I used it in the different forms (gel, crystal, spray) and now I use it as a roll-on. It's not local to the USA, I saw it first at my friends' place in Germany. Check Amazon UK, Germany and France to see if S&H is more reasonable (it should be from what I can see).
DeleteThanks Undina, I'll check it out. And if it's available in France, I can get it in Paris next week. :)
DeleteI have always used a spray deodorant. A few months ago I tried an anti-perspirant (Nivea) and it gives me the most awful rash. I also find that it makes my underarms sticky, but funnily enough only when I shower. Its like the combo of anti-p and shower gel creates a sticky mess.
ReplyDeleteI know there are fans of anti-p but I have tried it in the past (not just the Nivea) and all those I've tried have reacted badly on my skin. It may just be me and my skin chemistry...
Michael, I must admit Nivea does not work for me in any instance but body lotions and I'm not really a fan of theirs.
DeleteInteresting that anti-perspirants work so badly for you - there must be a chemical in there that you are probably sensitive/allergic to.
I have a really important tip for antiperspirant, if you choose to use it! (I don't want to try to switch anyone to the other side but I will say that, currently, the evidence against aluminum in antiperspirant is slim/inconclusive at best. But I understand not wanting to take any chances with your body.) Anyway, if you use the aluminum stuff, it works best if you put it on AT NIGHT. It doesn't matter when you shower, because it's not a physical barrier; it actually changes the chemistry of your armpit, and it needs time to take effect. I started putting it on at night a couple years ago and it really does work better. (But I don't wear it every day because I live in a dry climate.)
ReplyDeleteElisa, I've already used anti-perspirants so I don't really think I will stop since they so far worked best (I need to try that crystal though).
DeleteInteresting about what you say - I will definitely try putting it at night to see if the results are better.
Lucky you with a dry climate - we're getting more humidity here by the year.
Right now I'm using Almay unscented anti-p/d clear gel. I tried switching to natural products and used 4 or 5 that were very well rated/reviewed and none of them worked for me so I gave up. I find that pretty much all the aluminum anti-p/d work about the same for me since the active ingredient is the same. I'm using the Almay because I switched to products that do not test on animals and they are one of the few brands that make non-natural deodorants that don't do animal testing.
ReplyDeleteGood thinking about switching to a company that doesn't test on animals (I admit I forget to check that).
DeleteThe Almay sounds good. It seems most people these days choose anti-perspirants. :)
I admit I just started switching over myself, as part of a larger project to TRY and use more "green" beauty products of all types (no parabens, phtlalates, etc). Still working on it.
DeleteThat sounds like me. :)
DeleteI decide I'll buy only products not tested on animals and at some point, I forget and buy something that looks interesting without checking first.
Another vote for the Crystal. I introduced my spouse to it ten years ago and he uses it every day, to good effect-- and for it to work in a hot and dusty mail truck, it's got to be good.
ReplyDeleteOk, Crystal is on the list of things I need to buy as soon as possible.
DeleteAfter reading all the comments, I have high hopes for it now. :)
I use Roc Keops and it's good. http://www.roc.com/body/keops-deodorant
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the recommendation. :) Especially as RoC is available here.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIf sweat was an olympic sport, I could represent England, Scotland, and Wales :) Have you tried Tom's of Maine crystal stick? i hate the feeling of putting it on, but it works. I like the Dove anti-p, and I do put it on at morning, and night, and it's been the best product for me, by far. Love your blog!
Sincerely,
Carole MacLeod
Hi Carole, thank you for stopping by and the kind words. :)
DeleteI haven't tried Tom of Maine, so thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, Dove doesn't work for me, but I hear many people find it great.
