Short foray into mainstream

It's not often I visit Sephora as it's not close to my usual places but today, I was at the exact spot and had 10 minutes. :)
So, of course I took the chance and went in search of a spray of Chanel 19 Poudre.

Basically, I won't go searching for it again. I am very disappointed. Not that it's bad for the general, youthful I'd say, public, but it holds no candle to the original. It feels exactly like what Guerlain did with Shalimar, only their flanker is much more wearable to a lover of Shalimar than Poudre is to a lover of Chanel 19.

Not to mention the fact that after 10 minutes, I could no longer smell it on my arm. Poof! It was gone.
Notes I could find: neroli, galbanum, jasmine, iris, white musk, vetiver and tonka bean.

I also got to finally smell Jimmy Choo (which for some reason I keep calling in my mind Jimmy Chang, have no idea why...).
I thought it was perfectly nice and acceptable and would probably make a good gift if you have no idea what the woman in question loves (and she isn't a hardcore perfumista). I'll give it some skin time next time around.
Heart notes: Tiger Orchard

Top notes: Pear Nectar, Sweet Italian Orange
Base notes:Toffee, Indonesian Patchouli

The surprise of the evening was Bulgari Jasmin Noir. The only problem is I tested it on paper and Bulgaris usually fail in contact with my skin. What appears on paper is nowhere close to what appears on me. So, I'll give this another go on skin.
At first, I couldn't detect any jasmine, but then it slowly appeared and being upset with Poudre's disappearance, I forgot to follow but I will definitely give it another go. The idea I got wasn't noir though. :)

Notes: green plants juice, gardenia flowers, Sambac jasmine absolute, sateen almond aromas, dark notes of precious wood, liquorice absolute and accords of Tonka.

The last try for the evening was Kenzo's Flower Tag. And with it, my enthusiasm for discovering more mainstream evaporated. Yep, a fruity floral. A sweet fruity-floral.

Top notes: mandarin, black currant, rhubarb

Heart: peony, jasmine, lily of the valley
Base: tea, musk, vanilla

  1. Ines, I totally get what you're saying - had almost an identical experience at Sephora myself last week. The perfume I ended up with, Addict to Life, is nice and a little different than what I'm wearing right now, but not exactly groundbreaking. We will keep sniffing for those rare treasures!

  2. Ines, I had the same experience with No 19 Poudre disappearing in no time and so did The Non Blonde. I wonder if we are anosmic to the musk?

  3. Josephine, I felt a bit disappointed when I found out there weren't going to be a SEphora near me and I wouldn't be able to wander in at any time, but now, I'm fine with it.

  4. Well Tara, I wish there were more musks I could be anosmic to. :) It's quite possible as I don't remember that ever happening before. Really strange. Very disappointing.

  5. I have had this experience with mainstreams, too. Initial excitement and then letdown. It is almost worse because of the initial excitement. :)

I love your new blog design!

  6. I am most disappointed with the Chanel, such a letdown...
I always end up disappointed with mainstream scents, the cheaper materials just cannot compare to what we are used to from high quality niche perfumes. All the money going into marketing and only a little into the juice, one has to smell the difference after all.

  7. anotherperfumeblog, that is the worst part. They announce something that should by all accounts be great and it doesn't even come close to acceptable for me. I still can't believe I have such strong opinion, but I was really disappointed with Poudre. What were they thinking, I can't imagine...

  8. Dear Olfactoria, I keep thinking I'm becoming so very snobbish because I don't even get interested in mainstream and then something catches my fancy and I think, ok, it might be actually good and end up disappointed. So, I'm sure there is a gem hidden among the hundreds of mainstream releases, but chances of me accidentally stumbling upon it are minimal. Microscopical almost. ;)

  9. I'm probably in a better position than many others: I do not get excited about mainstream releases any more so I do not feel disappointed. I think it's an opposite: I get pleasantly surprised if I try something that isn't as bad as I expected.
The closest to disappointment I was with Chanel (since I bought Poudre unsniffed). But the more I wear it (now without big expectations) the more I like it. It will never replace my favorite No 19 EdT but I will use up my bottle.

  10. Undina that is lucky. :)
The thing is, I really don't get my hopes up very often but sometimes I can't help myself and usually end up disappointed.
I'm glad Poudre is growing on you, I don't think that will ever be the case with me though as it's hard to like something that disappears so fast (I'm still surprised at that). :)
