Random perfume (and other) thoughts

These are the things that don't require a post of their own but that keep going through my head lately:

  • After falling in love with Chypre Palatin, I cannot but think about Denyse's book The Perfume Lover and what she mentions there of her talks with Bertrand Duchafour - that he would do so many different and strange perfumes but has no financial backing for them (I now wish Mr. Duchafour could win lottery so he can create whatever he pleases and of course make it available)
  • And speaking of Mr. Duchafour and Denyse, I really want a bottle of Séville à l’Aube

  • I'm looking forward to reading Alyssa Harrad's book, Coming to my Senses, I haven't read any of the reviews as to not influence mine
  • Then again, I am looking forward to reading many books once my vacation starts (just 2 more weeks to go!) :)
  • While I'm on the subject of books, there is way too much of them I want to read and not enough time in my life to do it

  • Speaking of reviews, it's a minefield out there in the perfume community if you want to review a perfume that just came out, and you were lucky to receive a sample, but don't want to be influenced by what other reviewers wrote (especially if you're slow like me)
  • I'm still amazed by the perfume synchronicity happening - a perfume seems to find its way to you at the right moment when you need something exactly like that (latest case, Mito)
  • Hopefully, with my vacation nearing, I'll be able to write more perfume reviews as there are many perfumes I'd like to talk about (Chypre Palatin being on top of the list)

  • I also need to read my posts before I publish them because when I get to them later, I find really stupid mistakes I made while writing them

  • They might tell you (they being your trainers) that it's not easy to lose weight while running, but everyone else will think you did - you might lose a little bit but the rest gets re-arranged so everyone will think you actually lost quite a bit (I'm not going to talk about rising energy levels now which you get too)
  • While I'm on the subject of running, as with everything else in my life, I am slow but I get there in the end - you just need to let me do it in my own rhythm

OK, I'm off to finish the book I'm reading at the moment (re-reading Kresley Cole's Lothaire).

  1. Hi Ines. It's true that when something new and exciting launches, there are a lots of reviews at once -- and it can be frustrating navigating the blogosphere to avoid them when you want to keep your mind clear and write a review that is your own thoughts, not influenced by what you've read. But everyone brings something new to the dialogue on any perfume that's reviewed, and the nice thing about being "slow" to write about these new launches is that you, as a reviewer, have had the time to live with the perfume and form an unrushed opinion. And as a reader, if I'm really interested in a perfume, there's no "expiration date" in terms of my enjoyment in reading reviews of it, so I rather like coming upon a review of something after the initial hubub has died down. I count myself as being in the slow lane, too -- it's just how I am. :)

Regarding running and weight, I have to tell you, you've got a great figure -- you're long and stretchy like a model, so I never thought you needed to lose weight. But I bet the running has refined you even more, and that's what I've found it's done for me too. Best of all, if I can complete my 5-mile run in the heat and humidity, I can usually eat ice cream and not gain any weight (and in fact, lose weight). Love it! :)

    1. Dear Suzanne, I hope my post didn't sound like I mind that everyone is talking about the same launches because I don't. It was more in the line I can't read any because I am too slow with my own and don't want anyone else's to influence my opinion. And then once I post it, I no longer have the time to go back and read them all.
It all comes back to me being slow. :)

Thank you so very much for saying such lovely things about my figure, I am somewhat typical in the regard that I always think I'm too big and need to lose weight. Even though I'm aware of the fact that I'm relatively fit and healthy and that nothing is wrong with me. I still get trapped in the thin mania.

That's one of the great things I love about running - I don't really feel the need to eat more (I do get hungrier than before but the amount of food that I can eat didn't change) so all the calories I burn slowly work on parts of me that have some stored fat. :) And I no longer worry about eating anything. :)

  2. Love Chypre Palatin - check!
Want to try Séville à l’Aube.
Want to read... no, I won't even start listing all the books I want to read.

I can't believe it's time for your vacation again! I remember your last year's one :) Time flies.

    1. Undina, I can't wait for those 2 weeks to pass! It will my first proper restful vacation after the summer one last year.
It's been a rather busy year and now some reading, running, swimming and sun is exactly what I need. :)

    1. Oh, so nyou're reading it at the moment? I look forward to hearing what you think and I hope once you try Seville, you will decide to write a review as well. :)
In my case, it sort of asked for it. After smelling it, there was no way I wasn't going to write about it.

  4. Ines, it's so funny with synchronicity, just before you posted this I was thinking how I sometimes feel like just summing up what's in my head regarding this or that aspect of perfume or things vaguely related, but that they would never be enough for a post.
The way you have done it is excellent. Oh, and then the post I'm just writing, I didn't look up any reviews at all, only to find afterwards that everybody who has written about it has taken the same approach, and now I might look silly:-/ Ah well, I suppose people can think what they like:-)

    1. He, he, see, synchronicity at work at all times! :)
I think many reviewers try not to read other people's opinion of a perfume before writing their own. It's really difficult after you read someone's opinion not to let it influence your own.
Can you tell us what review is this you're writing? :)

  5. This is the kind of post that is perfect for me right now, as I'm suffering from temporary (I hope!) ADD. Lots of little bits to latch onto, like the fact that I am less susceptible to the minefields now because I haven't gotten many of the new launches, and how I want to smell Seville a L'aube, and how I also need to read my posts over before publishing. So all in all, I'm just nodding my head in agreement with all of the above. (Except the running part - I hate running.) ;)

    1. Natalie, it really seems to be such a time of the year (or life) when so many things ask for our attention.
I'm happy you agree with my conclusions - btw, you had me laughing out loud with your comment on running. :D

  6. I haven't reviewed any perfumes for ages as I don't feel like I'm saying anything others don't with new ones and I've done lots of my old favourites- I need to find some new samples- I hate it when all the blogs are about the same scent at once- though it's so exciting when you try a new one you like so tricky!

    1. Yes, that is exciting. :)
Are you going for the inauguration of Seville a l'Aube? I'd love to be there today and tomorrow and hear Bertrand and Denyse talk about it (and get a bottle for myself).
