Same thing each month

Ok, I'm warning you now, there might be TMI in this post so you might want to stop reading now.

Otherwise, you'll read a bit on my musings of a female life.

Since it's been more than a year of me writing this blog, I noticed certain things happening each month (or would that be cycle?). You know, the time of monthe when nobody better cross your path the wrong way or says something with the wrong intonation.
Well, it's that part of the month and I (again) have no wish to smell anything new and consider how much can I learn from it or how much I like it (and it's not that I don't have unsniffed samples at home). The only thing I want is some rest (ok, a lot of rest) and a book. And if there is a nice smell wafting around, all the better but I can't be the one who applied it or who thinks about what's in it that smells so good.
Does this happen to anyone else?
I also noticed that my English deteriorates at the same time (ok, not only English, my Croatian vocabulary is down to 20% of its usual size). And I cannot say a sentence without having to start over for it to sound normal and understandable. Couple of days from now, and I'll be back to my normal optimistic scenting self but until then, this is all you get.

And a quick note to say I will be giving 2 samples of something special next week when I will also be in my normal review-thoughtful mode.

  1. I'm wondering if so much of my not being able to smell things IS related to my hormones, esp given that I'm peri-menopausal (I actually had a hot flash on Saturday that lasted THIRTY minutes- gah!)

  2. Ines, the behavioral scientists say that most of what we communicate is non-verbal anyway, so don't worry about the words, although you seem to do just fine here on the blog! I think that those few days are a good time to withdraw--go inside, if you will--to the extent that our busy modern world will allow. Did you ever read "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant? It's a fictional re-casting of an Old Testament story, told from a female perspective. Okay, I am getting way Off-Topic here--sorry.

BF, I have finally gotten past the hot- ...er, I mean Power-Surge stage. :-D And those hormonal fluctuations do seem to affect the sense of smell, IMHO.

  3. For me, it's definitely a time for scaling back and shutting down. A nice book and some bed rest sounds just about right.

But there's something nice about the whole ebb and flow of it (so to speak-- not to be too literal here...). It's nice to retreat from life at times, and then rediscover one's delight and engagement. Better than needing to be continually thrilled and stimulated and finding the hot new thing all the time, wouldn't you say?

  4. I do have the sort of "hatch battening down" days you describe, if anything more often now, as my hormones are in full open revolt.

As for the inarticulacy aspect to this (is that a word?), I used to think it was because Mercury was in retrograde, but there may actually be some physiological explanation!

  5. I certainly have days like that, but for me, it's around the full moon more than straightforward lady stuff, which seems to make it even weirder. I think I might be part werewolf or something. I just give up entirely and write about the moon on those days....

  6. Bloody Frida, you know, sometimes I get really scared thinking of the havoc our hormones can do. And sometimes you aren't even aware of it. So, I can believe that it might be the reason you cannot sometimes smell some things.

  7. Queen_c thank you for the book recommendation - I haven't read that one but I will definitely hunt it down. :)
    And thanks for the support!

  8. LCN (Rita!) I missed you! Just so you know, I keep talking to the deity to make you start wanting to write about perfumes again. Just to give you a heads up. ;)
I agree with what you said - I actually do not make myself feel guilty for missing my pilates class or spending an afternoon at the hairdresser. I think you put it nicely, the flow and ebb, and discovering delight - that's just it. Otherwise there wouldn't be any delight.

  9. FS, ok, so I wasn't the first to mention the Mercury retrograde (I'm actually waiting on prolonging my cell phone subscription because I can get a new one with it, so I'm waiting for the retrograde period to be over). YEs, I do believe in my horoscope (not the daily one, the Susan Miller one). :)
But I'm not blaming this on Mercury - this is just me.

  10. Bonne Vivante, that's ineteresting... :) Some werewolf tendencies... Don't tell me the fiction I read might not be fictional at all. ;)
Do you read perhaps books like that?
I will go check what nice treasures are hidden at your blog.

  11. I don't like sampling during my cycle either. I find that I love or loathe things to extremes, and then might feel very differently a week later. Also, I find myself putting stuff on and fifteen minutes later wishing I'd never done it.

I'm all for the book and bed myself. And also bad tv.

  12. I totally get this "you don't want to cross my path" time of month. And the diminishing vocabulary. I'll forget to speak in my mother tongue!!!!

  13. Diana, exactly! Several times I though I hated something and then it turned out I really liked it and kept wondering why in the world I thought it's not good. :) Now I know.

  14. He, he. Ivana, it's good this doesn't last more than just a few days.
