Suzanne Collins: The Hunger Games

I admit, I am quite late to this party, but what's even stranger is, how did this party happen without me catching even a hint of its progress?
I mean, considering my taste in books, this one falls right in - except for the freshly discovred post-apocaliptic worlds I used to avoid. That might be the reason. :)

Anyway, after hearing about the movie, I checked the books and decided to give it a go at first (luckily for me, there are three).
And here I need to give you a word of advice:
DO NOT start reading that book unless you have enough time to finish it. Reading until 2 am when you have to get up in the morning is not very appropriate if you have to stay awake the whole day after. :)

But it's been a very long time since that happened to me.

So, the story. The basics are probably familiar to everyone interested in either the book or the movie.

What I'm wondering though is whether the movie will be able to display the bleakness of the lives in some of the districts and the non-smiling faces of the contestants (and in some cases aggresive and blood-thirsty).

Possibly the practicality of Katnyss'  character?
The world she lives in calls for practicality if you want to survive. That doesn't mean she doesn't have feelings, her family means everything to her but that is also where practicality steps in - she needs to keep them alive and well.
She's as strong a girl (she's 16) as you could imagine.

I must say I'm wondering which parts of the book are not going into the movie, and also how are some parts I'd like to see transfered onto the screen possibly being delivered?

I plan on seeing the movie and then reading the following 2 books (if I can wait that long). :)

I can't help but wonder if someone will be able to do something to bring down the awful world they live in.

  1. I was a bit "uhmpfgh" when I saw the movie was going to be PG-13. There's some stuff in the book that, if kept in the movie, would demand a more strict rating. Luckily, the reviews are nothing but positive, apparently they caught the essence of the book. Can't wait to see it!

  2. Ines, you're not alone in being late to the party. In the past couple weeks, I've been seeing that title everywhere I go: it seems to be on the cover of every magazine in the grocery store. I assumed it was the name of a new TV series, like Survivor. (I will admit that when it comes to the media, I've been living under a rock the past couple of years.)

Well, now I know that it's a book (and a movie) and apparently a very engaging one, if it had you up to 2 am reading it. Since your tastes and my mister's are very similar, I'll recommend this to him -- and I'll probably see the movie, if he goes, so maybe we can compare notes on this in the future. :-)

    1. I need to get used to embedded comments (I still keep on answering them at the end). :)
Suzanne, I completely understand being out of the loop, I don't watch TV either and heard about the movie and the book from a colleague who was certain I knew what he was talking about.
That was a week ago. Now I know what he was talking about. ;)
If your husband reads it, I'd love to know what he thought about it. :)

    1. womo531, you are obviously muchstronger than I am. I came to part 3 and thought about how now would be a good time to go to sleep but then I decided, just a few more pages and then I'll go to sleep. :) And then it was 2 am.

  4. Ivana, you're right, some parts of that book are just not very children friendly.
The more I think about it, the more I'm interested to see what's in the movie. :)

  6. Rose, I don't believe you'll be sorry you read the book. And I'd love to know your thoughts on it once you're through.

  7. The books are amazing. I read all three right before I saw the movie (last weekend) and am very impressed with the movie, to be honest.

    Thanks for sharing
