Vetiver for all seasons: D600 by Carner Barcelona

Luck hasn't been on my side lately when it comes to winning anything. So, when I learned I was the lucky winner of D600 samples on Ca Fleure Bon, I took it as a good sign.
And I was right to do so. :)

I might be repeating myself with my love of vetiver, but I really can't help it when many of those perfumes hit the right spots for me - warm, dryishly sweet and green (sometimes more yellow) and spicy enough to tickle your nose and refresh it in summer and give off warmth in winter.

Therefore, it was really to be expected I would love D600 as it's one of those vetivers. :)

Top notes: Madagascan Black Pepper, Sicilian Bergamot, Grapefruit.
Mid notes: Guatemalan Cardamom, Italian Iris, Egyptian Jasmine Absolut.
Base notes: Virginian Cedar Wood, Madagascan Vanilla Absolut, Vetyver

It is difficult to put into words the notes of this perfume. For me it starts dryishly sweet, lightly fruity and peppery (it really just tingles your nose a bit). You can smell from the start that this is a vetiver perfume and it took me several wearing to finally locate that grapefruit (and bergamot).
There is a masculine quality to this perfume (masculine in terms if what is sold today as masculine) as there is a bitter and sharp quality to the vetiver in the beginning, even though it has a sweetness underlying all that (I guess vanilla is doing its thing).

And I do believe vanilla is doing its thing from the beginning because at some point there is a spicey-warm quality to the perfume, possibly of the rum variety and I thought there might be some clove in this, but as the notes don't mention it, I'll settle for cardamom, iris, cedar and vanilla working their magic.
Basically, I love it from the start to its dry, woody and hayish finish.

  1. Thanks for the review, Ines. This is the kind of vetiver I usually *don't* like, I think, but I enjoyed reading your review. :)

    1. :)Natalie, I wonder what you would think after smelling it.
You know, I can't help but think, as I love vetivers so much, that when I fall in love with one, everyone would like it. ;)

  2. I'm never lucky enough to win any of the draws for samples. So happy that you won one. I too, love most things vetiver. Although, I have a vague recollection of not liking this one the first time I tried it. Guess I need to hunt down my sample vial and try it again. Perhaps it just needs different weather than the first outing.

    1. Well, Tatiana, I enter so many draws (as I follow quite a lot of blogs) and statistically speaking, my luck isn't very good. :) I'm pretty sure yours will eventually change though.
I wonder if women who don't like this possibly have an issue with a rather masculine opening?

  3. Ines, I definitely think of you as a vetiver connoisseur -- yet someone who also loves tuberose as much as I do -- which is interesting, because one note seems so masculine and the other so girly. We like our extremes, don't we?

My guess is that if you love this, I will too. I've got too many things to test right now, but eventually I'll check it out. Thanks for the review!

    1. Huh, now that you mention that Suzanne, it is interesting. :) I never thought about it like that.
But for some reason, even when I get a masculine vibe off vetivers, I still find those perfumes very comforting.
I wonder if that has some psychological background... :)
Has anyone ever looked into perfumes through psychology? That would be interesting.

  4. I just recently bought a small sample of this perfume (based on all good things I heard about it). I still haven't received it so I can't say if I like it but now I'm even more anctious to try it.

    1. Oh, I really hope you like it. :)
I know it's a matter of taste what one likes in perfumes, but this one just seems so easily likeable to me.

  5. Thanks for the lovely review, Ines, I'm so glad you liked D600, I really thought you would:-) I was just wondering; you don't mention orris, and for me that's what I find so great, the combination of vetiver and orris, which makes the fragrance go back and forth between soft and 'vamos'- so to speak;-) hence my tennis association.

    1. No, I don't mention orris, that is really a note that simply flies under my radar. I never, ever pick it up but now that you mentioned it, there is this mellowness in it (which is how I think of orris), I just never connected it.

  6. D600 is one of my favorites. It really is something special and you're right, it's perfect for all seasons; fresh for summer and spicy for the winter. And the notes are hard to pin down...but who cares, it's just plain delicious!

    1. Glad to hear I am not the only one having a hard time pinning down notes for this. :)
I can see D600 becoming a staple in my perfume wardrobe - it's just so easy to decide to wear it.
