Gluttony is such a great sin

Before you all start thinking I'm referring to the eating and drinking of past days, you're correct :) but not completely. I'm also referring to the fact that these days, I'm also a glutton when it comes to scents. I can't seem to get enough of them. Which is actually not a problem since I still have so many samples I need to try (for the first time) that I can indulge in smelling as much as I indulged in drinking (much less in eating though).

Anyway, that is my excuse for not reviewing perfume lately, I just can't single out any, I have this need to smell and I just cannot concentrate enough on any of the smelling points on me to be able to discuss it in a coherent manner. Does that happen to anyone else?

So, while I'm enjoying my smell-related gluttonous nature, I decided to curb it when it comes to food and drink. I completely enjoyed days related to the turn of the year without being concerned about my weight (and that is one of the best choices I could have made) so now it's time to get back on track (the exercising and eating track) and concentrate on work and smell. Well, maybe more like smell and work. ;)

So, I hope that very soon I will have a review for you and I'm considering Chinatown. I'm wearing it today since it's snowy and cold outside and I'm eating less - and Chinatown fulfills my need for warmth and gourmand taste. I'm aware that this one causes a lot of fuss, you either love or you hate it so I want to tell you why I like it and what exactly is it that I like so much about it (I'm still having problems distinguishing notes in there on my own) - and I hope that soon I'll be able to do that. I just need a little more time with it.

  1. I commend your efforts even if I can't help but thing a perfume called Chinatown aught to smell of jasmine tea, peking duck and ripe fruit... You know like every Chinatown outside of China which if my sister is to be believed smelt of sugarcane, exotic fruit and fresh sea food.
    You have a great weekend.

  2. I was just out with a dear friend who struggles with her weight-- I've been dragging her all over town to smell perfumes with me. She said the exact same thing that you did-- that the experience of gorging on perfume as a sensual experience gives her some of the pleasure that eating (too much sometimes) does. She wanted to thank me for finding a gluttonous outlet that doesn't get her into so much trouble. (Except in the pocketbook, as you point out, Ines...)

I'm the last person on earth to smell the B#9 series-- the boys at PeredePierre told me not to, and I've obeyed so far. (Then Dane, like, totally started loving on "Chinatown," so now I don't know what to think...) We have a Chinatown here in SF, so I guess I'll have to try it sometime. Happy weekend!

  3. Simone, I live in a part of world where I have no idea what are the smells of real Chinatown - but if I consider what their food smells like, well, the perfume has nothing to do with it. This is such a rich smell I practically swoon when I smell it. I absolutely love it. Although it really does not smell as nice on some people.
Hope you have a great weekend as well! :)

  4. Rita, there is so much I want to say in reply to your comment. :) So, I'll get to it.
I am so glad your friend said that smells can curb your appetite - I actually realized that some time ago (while dieting of course) and walking by a bakery with all its wonderful smells wafting around and my hunger was lessened just by smelling it. I find it unbelievable how smell can actually make you feel satiated. Whatever helps! :)
Regarding Bond No.9, I know they really do not deserve for us to be buying their stuff (up to now I only swapped for it) but some of their stuff really smells great and ought to be tried. I sampled a lot of their scents and up to now, I only liked 3 - Chinatown, New Harleem and Lexington Avenue. I do have high hopes for Success is a job in NY.
I hope you try them and I do wonder what you will think about them.
I hope you enjoy your weekend as well! :)

P.S. I really enjoy the Tom Fords (haven't tried the rest yet). I pretty much love whatever comes from him - why in the world can't he prefer women?! ;)

  5. Hey, I like two out of your three, Ines - Chinatown and New Haarlem. The other Bonds, I didn't dislike, but I didn't like any enough to remember them clearly.

On "I just cannot concentrate enough on any of the smelling points on me to be able to discuss it in a coherent manner. Does that happen to anyone else"

It happens to me all the time, yep. It doesn't stop be from babbling on, because for some reason I want to continue with the SOTD every single day, but my ability to actually perceive the scent and discuss what I perceived waxes and wanes.

I also shift between note awareness, and overall awareness - some days I can't get my brain to shut up about the individual notes and decide whether I _like_ the thing or not, and some days I can't get it to take the trouble to even consider notes.

  6. Hey CF, I have to say - you've made me feel quite relieved. :) Nobody ever talks about how it can sometime be frustrating when you know that you should be able to distinguish notes but it just doesn't happen. :)
And I agree with note awareness and total awareness - happens to me a lot and I cannot figure out how and why. Like with Chinatown, I know what the notes listes smell like, but for the life of me, I cannot say where they are in it. :) They are hiding from me. ;)
