Harry Potter 6 - the movie

- possible spoilers -

This is going to be a short venting of my frustrations. I finally saw the movie yesterday and I got out of the cinema angry. I remember when the book came out and I read it, I was totally shocked - it was dark, the ending was completely shocking and depressing and I couldn't wait for the last to come out. The series grew progressively darker and culminated in no. 7. The movies so far have kept with that. But not this one. If you haven't read the book, I believe the movie will be just fine. But for all of us fans, this is, mildly put, - disappointing. Not mildly put - it makes me angry. There are so many things missing that are in the book, which I understand, it's never possible to film everything and some things need to be changed. But to completely remove the grand finale battle and change the whole tone of the book, I find that unforgivable. What were they thinking?! The movie actually ends on a positive note?! There is no reason that I can find that acceptable. My guess is that they probably wanted the movie to be viewable to all of public, but in my opinion they completely missed the point of the book. I certainly hope they are not going to repeat anything similar with the final book.

Hopefully, this will pass by tomorrow because today I plan on re-reading the book 6 (and then the 7 as well), just to calm down a bit. :)

If you haven't read the book, see the movie and then read the book, and you'll see what I'm talking about. If you read the book and love it, I wonder what will you think of the movie.
The picture is of Luna Lovegood, one of the more fun characters in the book. I absolutely love her.

  1. I see you're passionate about it, so I can't use the old line "it's not the first time, it won't be the last" (even if true).
It's a bummer when this happens with some beloved (to each of us) piece of literature that gets "betrayed" at the adaptation to the screen. Sorry about that...

Hope you're not too hot and have the air-conditioning on full speed! :-)

  2. I have to agree with you. If you liked the book, the movie sucked. Not just because they left out parts that were important Battle at end), but because the added parts that were not there (Weasly's burning house, Showing the vanishing cabinet at the beginning of the movie, having harry eat at a diner and talk to a muggle before Dumbledore licked him up at the subway????).

FYI. I read the book before the movie. It will only make you more angry since it will really expose how horribly poor the movie was directed and presented it.

I hope the book 7 movies don't suck like this.

  4. Dear E,
I thought I got used to it. I was only a little upset with Lord of the Rings (and that only because of the Ents), but this has, in a way, made me sad. Not in the way I was when I read the book, but because they managed to take away the feelings the book provided. It doesn't happen often but this is one of the series that took a part of my heart, I don't know how better to explain it - when I finished reading it, it was as if a beloved friend moved away and I was never going to enjoy the friendship we shared. I know that many people see this as blown out of proportions and trendy to read, but I've been a fan since reading the first book back in 1999.

  5. Hey Hooton,
I see I'm not the only one upset with the movie. I didn't check the online community to see if there's an uproar, but I imagine there is. I keep thinking that they made the movie and they knew that everyone was going to watch it anyway, so they weren't really bothered with keeping with the story. I thought that J.K.R. had to give her blessing for the movie adaptation? If that's so, I can't believe she let this one out.
You know, while watching the movie, at some point I got confused and thought, is it possible I don't remember what happened in the book?
I totally agree about the cabinet - I know that while reading the book, I had no idea what was happening with Malfoy until the end, but in the movie they practically show it right from teh start.
Btw, I'm much more calm today, I read the book again over the weekend. :)
